Edward L. “Butch” Smith 80, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Monday, February 19, 2018, at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant following a brief illness.

He was born on April 6, 1937, in Oakville, the son of Lester & Lena (Evans) Smith. Ed was united in marriage to Suzanne Hartley on January 7, 1962 in Oquawka, Illinois. She preceded him in death on May 8, 2012. He served his country in The United States Army Reserve as a Staff Sgt. with Company C, 389th Engineer Battalion of Middletown. He received several metals during his military career including the Oakleaf Cluster. He worked for J.I. Case of Burlington for 34 years, Smith Electric and Stull Electric as a Certified Master Electrician. Butch was a very generous person. Every year for many years, he donated fans to those in need during the summer and donated money for Christmas gifts for children in need. He was involved at Midwest Old Threshers for many years using his skills as an electrician. Butch enjoyed riding motorcycles and won many trophies at motorcycle shows for his Honda Goldwing. He also enjoyed playing cards and was a member of the 20th Century Car Club for many years.

He is survived by his children; Bill (Dorothy) Sanders of Donnellson, Jim Sanders of Moravia, Ed Smith of Mt. Pleasant and Angie Smith Aldridge, of Dallas Center, grandchildren; Sara Smith, Mat Sanders, April Sanders Laver, Cala Sanders and Dani Aldridge Cole, great grandchildren; Kylie Sanders, Aubrie Sanders, his sisters; Marge Urich of Mayville, Wisconsin , Alice Sorden of Webster, Iowa, his brothers; Richard Peterson of Muscatine and Dave Peterson of Lone Tree, along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and one sister Betty Wunderlich.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 23, 2018, at 5 p.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant, with Rev. Earl Swigart officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard. Friends may call after 1 p.m. on Friday at the Murphy Funeral Home with the family present from 3 to 5 p.m. and will resume following the service until 8 p.m. A memorial has been established in his memory to the Fellowship Cup of Mt. Pleasant.
