James Allen “Mac” McDonald, 80, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Monday, January 21, 2019, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

He was born on April 19, 1938, south of Malcom, Iowa, the son of Robert Oscar & Opal Lucille Jackson McDonald. Mac grew up in the What Cheer area and graduated from Tri- County High School in 1957. He then joined the United States Navy and served from 1958 until 1962. In 1963 he joined the United States Army and served until 1966 during Vietnam. He also served in the Iowa National Guard. After he was honorably discharged from the service, he worked for Kings Berry Homes, drove a truck for 20 years, then Miller Lawn Service and later for Metromail for 13 years. Mac was united in marriage to Violet J. Lamb on April 5, 1974. She preceded him in death on June 14, 1975. He later married Erma J. Bush Hartman on May 27, 1997, celebrating 21 years of marriage.

Mac enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, reading, playing cards and other games, woodworking, and was known for his bread pudding. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He took up knitting and made hats and scarves, giving to friends, selling them to help benefit the Suicide Veterans Organization. He enjoyed spending time with family, friends, telling stories and passing on experiences. Mac belonged to Vietnam Veterans of America.

Mac is survived by his wife, Erma, of Mt. Pleasant, 7 step-children from his first marriage and one step-son from his last marriage, 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, three brothers, Frank (Sandy) McDonald of Barns City, Iowa, Mike (Cheryl) McDonald of What Cheer, Iowa and Richard McDonald of Porter, Texas, four sisters, Betty Richburg of Palmyra Ohio, Sue (Joe) Durian of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Alice Sherwood of Washington, Iowa and Rosemary (Robert) Pfannebecker of Webster, Iowa.

Mac was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Violet, one step-son and three brothers, Jerry Lee McDonald, Carl McDonald and Joseph McDonald.

According to his wishes cremation has been entrusted to Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date. A memorial has been established to the Suicide Veterans Organization in his memory.
