I love this picture of Joy–I can recognize that smile anywhere. I don’t think I have seen Joy since we all got together with a bunch of others from Iowa who'd all moved out West for one reason or another. We’d gathered for a farewell picnic at (a park in Ogden? or Logan? Utah) to say goodbye to Kathy after she'd been diagnosed with an aggressive cancer shortly after she'd come out to BYU. It was a wonderful day quite like what I can imagine someday in the future when I too, travel beyond the veil and united with our great eternal family. I remember Joy had such a strong testimony of the gospel and paying her tithing. I'll never forget her sharing her testimony in sacrament meeting in Burlington, about how She and ED early in their marriage had misplaced some checks from several church members who'd ordered wheat and beans for food storage one year which she and Ed were in charge of. They'd ordered the shipment and collected the checks which needed to be handed over when the truck arrived with nearly $3,000.00 worth of dried food. When that day came, they had forgotten where they’ed placed the checks for safe keeping and rather than cause alarm, she and Ed paid for that the food storage from their own savings which was a real hardship that Fall as they placed their trust in the Lord. Nearly a year later they were struggling with something they needed funds for and though they had prayed diligently about, chose to forgo the opportunity and pay their tithing in full at tithing settlement. That same day, those lost food storage checks spilled out of a book taken from their bookcase where they’d been placed for safe keeping all those months earlier and they were miraculously able to use the funds for something much more important to them at the time. I can only imagine the heavenly reunion with her lovely daughter Kathy after all these years. I wish send prayers and comfort to Ed, Ed Jr. and other extended family members at this time. Respectfully, Nora Kay Knight Golay from Burley, Idaho

Joy was a gem. It saddens me to hear of her passing. She was such a great storyteller and always had a smile. The picture in her obituary is exactly as I remember her from my time at Iowa Wesleyan. My sympathy to her family during this time of grief.

My heart goes out to you Ed and Eddie. Joy was a dear friend and I always enjoyed the time we spent together. I will always treasure our talks, road trips, and I will never play "Amish or Not Amish" without thinking of Joy. There will never be another like her and the world is a little bit darker now without the light of Joy that was her. She truly had a fitting name.

Joy was always a pleasure to spend time with at family dinners and gatherings. She had a great love of knowledge and she could always be counted on to ask interesting questions about other people's lives and plans. Joy enjoyed playing board and card games around the table, especially since it gave her a chance to continue the conversation and share some of what she knew about the workings of the world. She had the rare quality of truly wanting to understand other people better and always had a respectful and appreciative word for everyone.
